Your Patients Are Asking AI Who to Call. Is Your Name Coming Up?
Patients are starting their search by asking AI, not by scrolling results. Here is what those platforms are reading about your practice, and how to make sure your name is part of the answer.

It’s 11 p.m. A patient who just moved to your area is up with a toothache. They know they need to get it taken care of, but they have no idea who to call.
So they open Google or ChatGPT and ask: “Who’s the best dentist near me for a dental emergency?” Before they’ve visited your website, clicked on your Google listing, or read a single review, an AI-generated answer may already be pointing them toward a handful of practices.
The question is: Are you one of them?
That’s the shift happening in dental marketing right now. Patients aren’t only searching, scrolling, and clicking anymore. Increasingly, they’re asking a question and letting AI narrow the field for them. And that changes what it means to be visible online.
This Isn’t a Trend. It’s Already Your Reality.
You’ve probably already noticed that Google looks a lot different than it did a couple of years ago. Where you once saw a list of links, you may now get an AI-generated summary sitting right at the top of the page, pulling information together before the user clicks anywhere.

And it doesn’t stop with Google. Platforms like ChatGPT and Claude are becoming part of how people research everything from restaurants to travel plans to, yes, who they trust with their teeth. Around 1 in 5 Google searches already produces an AI-generated summary. And when one appears, users are significantly less likely to click through to a website at all.(1)
Patient behavior is shifting, too. According to the 2026 Patient Choice Report, 47% of patients have used AI tools as part of their search for a doctor, dentist, or other healthcare provider, up from 31% just nine months earlier. The percentage who say they rely on AI when choosing a provider also more than doubled, climbing from 17% to 36%.(2)

Okay, those numbers are worth sitting with for a minute.
You’ve invested in your website. Your SEO. Your Google Business Profile. Your reviews. All of those things are meant to help a new patient discover your practice and decide you’re worth calling. They still matter. But now, part of that decision may happen before the patient ever lands on your website.
GEO, AEO, AIO... What These Acronyms Actually Mean (And Why You Don’t Need to Memorize Them)
If you’ve talked to anyone in marketing lately, there’s a decent chance you’ve heard terms like GEO, AEO, or AIO thrown around. Don’t let the alphabet soup intimidate you.
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. AIO is another term you may hear used in roughly the same conversation.
You do not need to memorize any of them.
They’re all getting at one core challenge: making it easy for AI platforms to understand your practice, trust the information they find, and include you when someone asks a relevant question. In other words: When a patient asks AI for a dentist recommendation, does your name come up?
If you don’t know, you’re in very good company. A lot of practices haven’t started looking at their visibility this way yet. Now is probably a good time to start.
Think of It Like Your Reputation in the Community
Here’s one of the easiest ways to think about AI search.

Imagine someone just moved to your area. They don’t have a dentist yet, so they ask a coworker: “Who do you see? Is there anyone you’d actually recommend?”
That coworker pulls from what they know. Maybe they’ve heard your name before. Maybe they know what you specialize in. Maybe three different people have told them you’re great with anxious patients. Or maybe your name never comes up.
AI is doing a version of that conversation at scale. It looks across information from your website, Google Business Profile, reviews, directories, local mentions, and other sources to piece together who your practice is, what you offer, and whether you’re relevant to the question being asked.
The clearer and more consistent that picture is, the easier you are to understand. And when your online presence is full of gaps, contradictions, or outdated information? You’re making AI connect a whole lot more dots.
So What Is AI Actually Looking At?
Here’s the good news: improving your visibility in AI results does not require sacrificing a laptop under a full moon or discovering some secret new marketing hack. A lot of the fundamentals are familiar.
Your website content
Your website needs to clearly explain what you do, who you help, where you’re located, and why a patient might choose your practice.
That might sound obvious. But plenty of dental websites are still surprisingly vague. Think of your website like a case presentation. You wouldn’t hand a patient a two-page pamphlet, skip all their questions, and call it informed consent. Your website shouldn’t do that either.
When someone asks, “Does dental insurance cover implants?” or “What should I expect at my first cleaning?” or “Can a dentist see me today for a broken tooth?” does your site provide a useful answer? Because if yours doesn’t, another practice’s might.
Your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is still a big deal. Your categories, services, hours, photos, location information, and reviews all help Google understand your practice and when it should appear. The more complete and accurate that information is, the less guesswork there is.
Your reviews
Reviews have always influenced patient decisions. Now they also give AI systems more context about the actual patient experience at your practice.
What do people consistently mention? That you’re great with kids? That your team makes anxious patients comfortable? That you can get emergency patients in quickly? That your implant process is incredibly thorough?
Those patterns help paint a much richer picture than a star rating alone. And here’s the part that matters: 60% of patients say they trust AI-generated summaries about providers without independently verifying the information.(2) If the information AI finds about your practice is thin, outdated, or incomplete, plenty of patients aren’t going to fact-check it for you.
Your consistency across the web
Your website says one thing. Google says another. Healthgrades has your old address. Zocdoc has a phone number you haven’t used since 2021. Not ideal.
Anywhere your practice appears online contributes another piece to the puzzle. Keeping your name, address, phone number, services, doctor information, and other important details consistent helps search engines and AI platforms understand that all of those mentions belong to the same practice.
The Good News: You’re Not Starting from Zero
Before you close this tab and add “figure out AI” to the bottom of an already terrifying to-do list, here’s the part we actually want you to remember:

A lot of the work that helps you show up in AI is work good dental marketers should already be doing.
A strong website. Helpful service content. Local SEO. Accurate listings. Consistent reviews. Clear information about your doctors, services, location, and patient experience. None of that suddenly became obsolete. In fact, it became even more valuable.
The fundamentals aren’t changing, just the stakes. Now there’s a layer of the patient journey that occurs before a single click is made. And the practices positioned to benefit aren’t necessarily the ones chasing every new AI trick the second it pops up on LinkedIn.
They’re the ones making it ridiculously easy for a patient, a search engine, or an AI platform to understand three things: Who are you? What do you do? Why should someone trust you?
That’s still good marketing. AI just gave it another place to show up.
So, Does Your Practice Show Up When Patients Ask AI Who to Call?
That’s becoming a question every dental practice should know how to answer.
Because ranking on Google is only one piece of visibility now. Understanding where your practice appears in AI-generated results, what those platforms are saying about you, and where information gaps exist gives you a much clearer picture of how patients are actually finding you today.
At Wonderist, we’re looking at AI visibility as an extension of the same work we’ve always cared about: building a strong online presence, creating genuinely useful content, and making it easy for the right patients to find and trust your practice.
The platforms may be changing. Good dental marketing isn’t. And if your name isn’t coming up yet? At least now you know what question to ask.
